On March 25th, boxer Joey Spencer of Linden, Michigan engaged in a thrilling bout with Jesus Ramos. Joey has been a professional boxer since 2017 and a Wentworth-sponsored athlete since 2018. His latest fight served as the co-main event of a huge pay-per-view card in Las Vegas, Nevada. After six rounds of nonstop action, the referee called a halt to the contest, awarding Ramos the victory. Although the end result wasn’t what Joey envisioned, the experience gained from this event will be invaluable.

Joey was kind enough to stop by our Fenton office to discuss last month's fight, his mindset, and plans going forward.

First, I had to congratulate Joey on his accomplishment. To be able to perform on a large stage in front of thousands of fans is an amazing feat that only a select few ever reach.

If you could, describe the feelings and emotions of having the chance to realize part of your dream of performing on such a huge stage in an event of this magnitude.

Joey Spencer: “It was definitely a huge event and a lot of A-list celebrities were there. I locked eyes with Floyd Mayweather who was seated a few rows back. The entire atmosphere was crazy so it definitely was an almost overwhelming experience. I’ve been on big cards before but this was an entirely different level of production. So many big fights have been fought at the MGM it was like a dream come true.”

Looking back at your preparation for the fight is there anything that you would change?

Joey Spencer: “It definitely was a learning experience and there are some things that I will take from this experience and change going forward. I feel like maybe we pushed the gas in camp a little too early and peaked sooner than we would have liked. I’m not using that as an excuse for losing the fight, I just feel that in the future I’ll try to peak closer to the fight as opposed to in camp.”

How long were you in camp or preparing for this fight?

Joey Spencer: “I actually started training for this fight immediately after my last fight six months ago. I wasn’t exactly sure who my opponent would be but I knew it was going to be a big fight so I got right to it. Looking back I think that was a mistake and I'll use it as a learning experience for future fights.”

What kind of feedback have you gotten from your promotional team and fellow fighters?

Joey Spencer: “Just about all the feedback I’ve gotten back so far has been positive. Even though I lost, everyone was really excited about the action packed nature of the fight and the entertainment value. They acknowledged my grit and determination. Even though we didn't get the outcome we were looking for there were still some positive things I could take from the fight.”

How has your mindset changed since suffering your first defeat?

Joey Spencer: “At this point I’m still kind of taking it day by day. When you lose a fight it's a little different than losing a football or basketball game. You almost lose a small piece of your manhood. You have to go through a rebuilding process mentally and that's the stage that I’m currently in.”

What role has your faith played in this whole process?

Joey Spencer:  “It's funny because when I asked my promoter to get me this fight he was skeptical and a little doubtful as to whether they could pull it off. When it was confirmed, I felt like the whole scenario was meant to be, especially seeing how it’s so rare to have two undefeated prospects face each other early in their careers. Obviously there was disappointment initially but with the help of my team and family I’m confident that God has a plan and my journey is only beginning.”

After being in camp for so long and having your diet restricted, what was your first post fight meal?

Joey Spencer:  “You know it kinda sucked Lol, I had so many cuts and stuff inside my mouth I wasn’t able to eat what i wanted for like a week. I ended up actually losing weight plus we were in Vegas and they got all those buffets so yeah that was really disappointing but I’m all good now.”

Now that the dust has completely settled, what can we expect from you and your career going forward?

Joey Spencer: “I’ve just been spending time with my family. I haven't been back to the gym yet. Hopefully I can get back in the ring in a few months with a tune up kind of fight and then on to something bigger.”

I have no doubt that Joey will eventually realize his dream as he exhibits all of the prerequisite qualities to make it happen. Everyone at the Wentworth Real Estate Group wishes Joey good health and luck as he continues his journey.
